Driving guides
The two areas most drivers fail on the SGI road test — written step-by-step.
Parallel parking — SGI road test version
ℹ
SGI only tests parking behind one car — not between two. Your reference car is ahead. The space behind is open. No front car to worry about.
1
Signal and position. Activate your right turn signal. Pull up alongside the reference car — parallel, about 1 metre apart. Align your front bumpers roughly even.
2
Stop and check. Come to a full stop. Check your mirrors, then do a full shoulder check right and left before reversing. Your examiner is watching this closely.
3
Reverse and steer right. Shift to reverse. Move slowly. When your rear bumper clears the reference car's rear bumper by about 1 metre, turn the wheel sharply toward the curb (right).
4
Counter-steer left. When your vehicle reaches roughly 45°, turn the wheel sharply left to bring the front end toward the curb. Continue reversing slowly.
5
Straighten and stop. Straighten the wheel as your car comes parallel. You should be 15–30 cm from the curb. Do not touch or mount it.
6
Secure and signal out. Apply the park brake, shift to Park. To leave: signal left, check mirrors, shoulder check both sides, then pull out smoothly.
⚠
Automatic fail triggers: hitting the reference car, mounting the curb, skipping a shoulder check, not signalling, or finishing more than 30 cm from the curb.
ℹ
Visual diagram coming in v2 — illustrated step-by-step parking guide with proper top-down view.
4-way / All-way stop
Four stop signs, one at each corner.
ℹ
Rule: First to stop = first to go. Simultaneous arrival? Yield to the vehicle on your right. Turning left? Also yield to oncoming traffic going straight.
1
Full stop behind the stop line — wheels must completely stop. A rolling stop is an automatic fail on the SGI road test.
2
First-come, first-served. If another car arrived before you, wait for them to clear the intersection before proceeding.
3
Tie goes right. If you arrived at exactly the same time as another vehicle, yield to the car on your right.
4
Left turn yields. Even if you have right of way at the stop, you must yield to any oncoming vehicle going straight or turning right before completing your left turn.
2-way stop
Only the side street has stop signs. Main road has no stops.
⚠
Rule: Main road traffic has the right of way at all times — they never stop. You must yield to all traffic on the main road in both directions before entering.
1
Stop at the sign. Yield to all traffic on the main road in both directions, plus any pedestrians crossing.
2
Only enter when there is a clear, safe gap. Never force main-road traffic to slow down or brake.
3
Turning left? Also yield to oncoming main-road vehicles going straight, even after you've cleared the stop.
Uncontrolled intersection (no signs)
No traffic lights, no stop signs, no yield signs.
ℹ
Rule: Yield to traffic already in the intersection. If arriving simultaneously, yield to the vehicle on your right.
1
Slow down. Yield to any vehicle already in the intersection or clearly further along.
2
Arriving at the same time? Yield to the car on your right.
Yield sign
Downward-pointing triangle sign.
⚠
Rule: Slow down and give right of way to all vehicles and pedestrians on the road you are entering. You may not need to fully stop — but you must if traffic requires it.
1
Slow to a safe speed and check for approaching traffic and pedestrians in both directions.
2
Only proceed when there is a clear, safe gap. Never force other traffic to react to your entry.
3
If it is not clear, stop and wait — a yield sign does not prohibit stopping.
